The Homeschool Mother's Journal and Weekly Wrap Up

In my life this week...

I'm realizing there is only so much one person can do for someone else.  The lessons I've been learning this week are preparing me for something, but I'm not sure what.  Are changes coming?

My daily devotions seem to be directing me, but I always seem to be asking, "Is it His will or mine."  I'm trying to patiently wait and look for answers.  It's not easy resting in Him ignoring all the outside influences and problems.

In our homeschool this week...

I haven't done a Weekly Wrap Up in a while because we've been changing curriculum again.  I know, I know, when will I find something and stick with it?  Well, when I find what really works for my son I guess.

It's great that we've been using FREE curriculum, you don't have to worry about all the money you just wasted on a product you can't use.

There have been a few subjects where our curriculum choices have worked.  My son finished the History book we were reading together, and is excited to move on to his next book.  Also, he is almost done with the Science book he has been enjoying, and is moving through his Happy Hollister collection with more speed than I expected.  For a reluctant reader I've been surprised this is the area he is excelling in right now.  I'm counting my blessings.

We are still struggling through Math and Grammar, but there might be some progress in this area soon.  I am taking on a "wait and see" attitude, not pushing, just presenting exercises to gauge his response.  These subjects are too important in his education to have him detest them.

So, for this week it has been productive, and we are plodding along.

Places we're going and people we're seeing...

We had our second visit with my mother's PCP.  Let me just say the jury is still out on whether he will be beneficial in my mother's care, or a pain in my neck.  I get the feeling doctors don't like to deal with caregivers.  I will leave it at that for now.

My favorite thing this week...

Sitting down and relaxing with my son to watch What's in the Bible DVD #5.

What's working/not working for us...

Some of our curriculum as stated previously, but also my cleaning schedule.  I always feel behind.  I understand this is common for most of us, but when you are a caregiver you don't have the luxury of falling behind with some chores.  I really need to get back on top of some things this next week.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have...

Is going back to the basics really so bad?  Are the "classic" textbooks from years ago really so outdated that our children can't get a good education from using them?

A photo, video, link, or quote to share...

I saw this really great quote on Twitter this week...

"A diamond is just a piece of coal that handled stress exceptionally well."  Unknown

How was your week?

  1. Great post! I also struggle with God's will vs what "I" want God's will to be. My heart is with you. Have a great weekend!

  2. I have a daughter that homeschools and she loves it. I will send your link to her. Also, I think it is a great idea to go back to the basics. I think that children need to learn from the classics. Some of the history books have actually left out important historical facts that would be good for children to learn.
    Blessings to you!

  3. Just remember: you can only do so much! You weather things beautifully and extraordinary dedication, I know you'll come through on the other side just fine. :)

Now, to answer your questions, I think it is possible to use the classics. Sometimes it may be necessary to supplement, but if it worked before, I don't see why it wouldn't work now. I guess it just really depends on the student.

Sorry, that wasn't really insightful... Try to relax a tad and remember, we're in the same boat with you {you should see my house...}!

  4. We always used math books that were a little "outdated" but does math really change from year to year??? Don't think so. ha. I think book publishers want us to think that we have to update far more than we do.

  8. I love the classics and absolutely loathe our modern textbooks! You CAN home educate well and for free with the books of old, without a doubt in my mind! :D

Many blessings in the new week!

  9. Free-yep that's what we have been able to do so far, too. If someone gives me something, I take it that is what the Lord thinks we should be using so I run with it. I hope you can find some balance in your housework, I am not a caregiver, but staying on top of our home has been heavy on my heart lately. I feel your pain!
