In my life this week…
I blinked on Monday and now it's Friday. Where did the week go? ;)
In our homeschool this week…
We fell a little behind, but my son accomplished something really big this week.
Living in California my son wears sandals, all the time. While taking walks I noticed he complained about his knees hurting more than someone his age should. So, we purchased some proper shoes. Problem: my son doesn't know how to tie his own laces.
At almost 10 years old this is unacceptable and was a major oversight on my part. Then again my son picked it up pretty quickly, and we were out walking in comfort before you could whistle Dixie. Great accomplishment, little man!!!
My favorite thing this week was…
Getting out and enjoying the sounds, sights, and smells of autumn. We had off and on rain last week, so it was nice to have some sunshine and clean air.
What’sworking/not working for us…
Ihover too much. My son has his plan and resources, now I need to stand back and let him go for it.
Things I’m working on…
Our curriculum resources. This has been a painstaking process, and I'm trying to get it right. More later...

Guess what?! My almost 7-year-old doesn't know how to tie his shoes either. And we live in MAINE. There's no going without sneakers and boots MOST of the year here! I don't think my daughter learned until she was around 8! I just never thought about it. (My younger son has fine motor skills delays so I haven't bothered spending time teaching tying right now.) Sounds like he got the knack of it quickly though!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the autumn leaves photos! We're at peak foliage here...and it's raining!
Stopping by from THMJ!
Velcro shoes were the cool things when I was a kid, so I never really learned to tie my shoes well til I was way too old (don't remember how old exactly). Way to go for your son!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny the things that can fly under your radar when it comes to your children! Sounds like it's been a good week, though. You may have heard about some of the blogging awards circulating through the blogging world. Well, I have awarded you one! You can see the details at: http://sunshinesentiments.blogspot.com/2011/10/unexpected-applause.html. I have enjoyed reading your blog and wanted to share it with others.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a wonderful weekend! Smiles -
Gorgeous leaves! You know, I think learning to tie one's shoes is easier when one has a few years' life experience, say 10 years, for example. I recall trying to teach my child when she was five years old, and the whole thing caused us much stress and angst. Sort of like making curriculum choices, too. ;-) Blessings!
ReplyDeleteHi! Stopping over to visit from THMJ! Nice to "meet" you! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm right with you with the shoelace thing. I guess I really need to show my younger son, as well. He has always preferred velcro shoes, so there hasn't been too many opportunities. :-)
Your autumn leaf photo is absolutely gorgeous! I just love this time of year.
Have a great weekend!
Many blessings,
Lisa
I just realized this week when we were at the store buying runners that a few of my kids don't know how to tie laces either!
ReplyDeleteI can be a bit of a hoverer too!
Your leaves look great! We do not have a lot of leaves turning yet, but they are getting there.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous photo! You captured the glorious colors of fall leaves beautifully.
ReplyDeleteDropping by from the Weekly Wrap Up, I learned when my DS was learning to read that it did not matter how old he was when he learned to do it, just as long as we accomplished it. Congrats to your son for an accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteMy two absolutely refuse to learn how to tie their shoes:( I gave up the fight and will try again later. glad your son finally learned:) Mine might be going to college wearing velcro shoes!!!
ReplyDeleteI awarded you the Versatile Blogger award today! http://thechaosandtheclutter.com/archives/1259
ReplyDeleteI do believe that time just jumps and I find myself missing some moments. You are right, Monday is here and Friday follows after. I don't know what happened on the in between days. I can hardly believe it is fall because I can't remember having a summer; at least in this area.
ReplyDeleteLoved your thoughts and the pictures.
Blessing to you and keep on enjoying your journey.
That's something we don't really think about - tying shoes in the age of velcro. Something else I realized that my kids needed help with . . . telling time on a regular clock.
ReplyDeleteMy son was older when he learned to tie his shoes too, because all he had was velcro, lol!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you aren't hovering. I tried to not hover either when I was homeschooling, lol!
A friend, who was a teacher, told me that her complaint about homeschooled kids was that if they transitioned into her classroom they didn't know how to do anything on their own and they needed direction for just about everything.
I loved your comment about thinking you might get electrocuted from the hair dryer, lol! I can relate!
Love that you recognize that you hover too much! It's a hard habit to break!
ReplyDeleteFor what it's worth, my son only learned how to tie his own shoes in the past year or two and he is almost 14.
Oh friend...you're making me feel better...we're still working on a couple who need to tie laces :)
