New to Homeschool Series

Leaving the brick and mortar schools behind can be a thrilling, and terrifying concept.  There are many myths and misconceptions about homeschooling from religion to curriculum to socialization.  Education is about the student not the building.

You may have heard the concept of "Learning Style".  Do you know your child's learning style?  Do you know your learning style?  It could be one of the most over-looked issues in the homeschool process.  So, what are the learning styles?
  • Visual (spatial). You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding.
  • Aural (auditory-musical). You prefer using sound and music.
  • Verbal (linguistic). You prefer using words, both in speech and writing.
  • Physical (kinesthetic). You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch.
  • Logical (mathematical). You prefer using logic, reasoning and systems.
  • Social (interpersonal). You prefer to learn in groups or with other people.
  • Solitary (interpersonal). You prefer to work alone and use self-study.
Without going into all the technical information, research has proven that each learning style uses different parts of the brain. By involving more of the brain during learning, we remember more of what we learn.

You can go to learning-styles-online to take the Memletics learning styles inventory (quiz, questionnaire, test).  It is free, and you can do the test online, or download the test in Microsoft Excel or Adobe PDF format.

  1. What a great blog! Thanks so much for your encouraging comment over homeschool-articles! I'm glad that you were encouraged (and maybe a bit challenged!) to defend homeschooling with just a bit more courage! It's a tough one....took me LOTS of years to get to that point...and it has brought with it a bit of a price unfortunately. Sadly, I had some friends who felt VERY comfortable questioning and criticizing my decision to homeschool, but were not nearly as comfortable when I began to question and criticize THEIR decision to place their children in public school. Just a little bit of a double standard...huh? Anyway, glad you liked the article!!

  3. Hi Lynda! OOPS! I just made the connection that you were not the "Linda" that wrote this article :) Thanks for posting it and passing it on. Do you think I could re-post this on my blog sometime? Do I need permission from the source of the article? Did you get permission?
    Thanks!

  4. LOL! I'm sorry, Linda, but you might want to add another update....I didn't write Rabbi Dude!! :-) My co-contributor on this blog, Arby, wrote it. He's a much funnier writer than I am!! :-) Definitely send your readers to our blog....just attribute that post to Arby, not me!! He and I have a very similar desire to stand up for homeschooling!! It's why Arby started this blog!

And @Tracy...you have my permission to post it on your blog.:-) Just include a link to the source on homeschool-articles.com!
